Angelica had never set foot in a school before. Born in the eighteen-hundreds to wealthy parents in England, she’d had a governess growing up and had never set foot in a human school until she decided to start taking college courses at Oxford in the eighteen-seventies. From what she could glean from the school as she and Dave walked its halls, it was emotionless, dull, and severely dampening her creativity. She could only imagine how the students trapped here for multiple hours a day felt.

To top it off, it seemed they had no AC and sweat ran down her neck in rivulets.

“Werewolves don’t heal like humans. While the wounds will be closed, if this is our guy he’s going to have tender bullet wounds in the left shoulder and hand. Watch to see if he’s favoring one side over the other,” she told Dave.

They approached the guard and both of them looked at each other and sighed. There was no way in Hell he was the werewolf they were looking for. He was at least three inches too tall and much broader than the man they had seen the previous night.

“What now?” Dave asked.

“Back to the drawing board,” she replied. “And hope for a break. What kind of werewolf murders on a regular basis like a human serial killer and yet I can’t catch him?”

“And now that we broke his pattern, he might not kill every Thursday anymore,” Dave added. “That means no one under the age of ten is safe until we get the bastard. Why do they like eating children?”

Angelica smirked. “Children’s blood and organs are younger, purer. They have no alcohol damage, less diseases that come with getting older. So when a werewolf eats a child’s heart, it’s like a superfood. For vampires, it’s innocence. The purer the blood, the better it tastes and the more strength it gives us. However, it is illegal to feed on children. And it’s also illegal for any creature to go out and kill wantonly. We have a system for them to feed. There’s no need for murder anymore.”

They were back in Angelica’s car and she said, “Maybe if I take another look at the case files from when I worked with your uncle, I’ll find something. He can help, too, since he was so insistent we work together. Let him do some of the work.”

Dave laughed. “Yeah, let’s go bother him with this shit.”

When they got to the precinct, they greeted the bluesuit working the desk – not the same one Angelica had met the other day – and went to the Captain’s office, where he was at his desk, on the phone.

“... Of course, it’s fine. You feel better and tell your brother to quit messing with that BB gun. It’s not a toy. Or I’ll come arrest him… All right. ’Bye.” He hung up and looked at the two of them. “Okay, why are you here?”

“We’ve hit a last resort and want you to help,” Dave said, sitting down.
